MTM Studio Net

Competition 2 is over and you've all really raised the bar in quality. Competition 2 Here.

What's left but to make a start on competition 3!
Does anyone have any suggestions on sample submissions? It may be quicker for me (Alex) to just compile a small selection again, or maybe the samples could be compiled by the winner...?! Also, do we possibly want to make things a little bit more difficult and have slightly fewer samples? Let's get the ball rolling and try and make this competition even bigger than the last!

Your suggestions below, thanks.

Hi,

Sorry guys I am too busy in the studio these days. I think you should make it simple and cool as possible. Track from a sign wave and also that using vocal sample and turn into a tune will not gonna work for me guys, I don't wanna freeze my ass sitting in front of the computer. That genre specific thing, I think for that you need to give right samples for the specific genre.

Last time the drum samples were too bad, they were maximized in a bad way and I don't know why. Whatever the third competition would be please keep the samples technically right and natural.

Cheers,
Kashif

Genre specific could work if there were a number of disparate styles to choose from - say (just for EG) IDM, Lo-Fi, Rock, Hip-Hop.

That way peeps could enter a track into the section they wished, and be judged against similar-styled songs. Trip Hop, for example, sounds pretty awful compared to Psy Trance - the production values are simply chalk/cheese - just too different to objectively compare.

Or, another way could be to have a little/lot/ridonkulous amount of sample manipulation - some people like to cut'n'paste, others like to make instruments from sines, etc. People could enter their track into whichever category they think it bleongs. That way the leftfield jobbies would only be compared to other experimental tracks, thus making it more attractive to people who like to take things to the extreme!

A third option could be to have hardware/software sampler categories - tracks made with hardware versus each other and tracks made with software would be versus each other. Prolly only me and Scot Barry still using hardware samplers though LOL.

Fourth, what about DAW Wars? Pro Tools entries against each other. Logic entries against each other. Live entries against each other etc. That way, only the skills of the entrant and their use of a limited tool pallete as well as a limited sound pallete would be being compared.

I've said it before, but the best way to have these comps run is to have a level playing field as much as possible, and winner stays on is a MUST - I've seen it work so well on SP-Forums..

There's my ideas LOL

Hello all,

I am a new member. I found your site through a search to solve a problem which took me to your forums. In which I learned quite a bit.
Always on the quest to improve my relationship with sound, so here I am. The contest sounds exciting and I am in. I don't have too much experience in sound manipulation so this is a great motivation for me to learn some new skills. I have read all your ideas and they all sound exciting. Even the sine wave experiment. I think that what is happening during the process is more important than the finished product. The process of watching yourself create is always amazing. Getting lost in the moment, looking at the clock and 5 hours went by unnoticed. Dancing with your imagination. So no matter what you come up with, I'm in, and will be better for it. So I win the competition hands down.
Thank you,
Paul

O.k. So does anybody have an idea as to when this contest will be, maybe we can do a pre contest contest while we are waiting for the official contest.

Knock out, qualifications...which will draw us closer to the sine wave challenge

maybe we could have a number of pieces of paper each with the name of a music genre, put them in a hat.... then we all make a music track in any genre.... then like in a lottery we extract one piece of paper from the hat and the track that got the closest to the genre written on the piece of paper wins! JK :)

on the sinewave suggestion this means that anyone whos already experimented with this idea has a ready made entry.i am with using the same plan as last time.this means that everyone does remixes that are recognisable to the main theme.again the idea of sticking to one genre sucks.maybe they should stick us all in a large cage and we all fight to the death using an instrument of our own choice, imagine the commentary "morr has just hit astral traveller with a set of opals but astral is fighting back with a pre cbs fender jazz bass"

I just joined MTM Studionet and this sample comp sounds awesome. I'm definitely up for it!

As for the single genre, I'm not liking the sounds of that. It's too limiting and will definitely mean less people will enter because they may not like the chosen genre and will not have fun making the track, which is the whole point of the exercise is it not??

I say a small collection of samples from Alex or the winner of comp 2. I'm going to uni this month, so I'll have plenty of time to take part! Haha. A pre-contest sounds awesome too. I can't wait for the next set of samples!!

how about limiting the attributes a competitor has in competing for part 3... as in the basics of the form ... Two turntables and a microphone, no midi allowed... single instrument,duo,trio,quad,Etc... up to electronica...
