Nile Rodgers
I am digging the diversity of genres (and people) on this board, it has grown and grown, with youngsters (say Ashley W among many) making great grooves with the new tech. Now, among the six-stringers, who is up for a Nile Rodgers-influenced disco-funk gtr track competition... not covers necessarily , just loosely in that style. And how many of you use a (white is best) sharkfin pick held with three fingers instead of two to play his style of rhythm part (eg Le Freak). I have gotten rid of my all-purpose amp, so it is all DIed or Tonelabbed... what do ya say

No takers? Do you guys know Nile Rodgers of Chic? Producer/arranger Sister Sledge, early Madonna, countless other Top 10 artists? The rest of the band (Tony Thompson and Bernard Edwards) are dead. Keys player still around I think, and backing singers. They totally redefined disco-funk in the late seventies. If you want to understand real groove I strongly suggest listening to them, whether you play guitar and bass or not. There is nothing "easy" about their music but the chords and melodies are straightforward... Few people can actually play like Rodgers (I can, it took about 4 years) but it is worth a try if you want to understand dance rhythm guitar... no software gets close. anyway no time now

Yes but power Station was a singer without a rhythm section. I was also a punk, we played The Passenger and Sweet Jane and EMI but we also played EW and F's Fantasy (confused the fck out of ppl) , then I got into funk bigtime. The last "rock" I listened to was Magazine and Pils Metal Box. in the 80s who coul resist The Smiths and then Chili Peppers in the 90s. Blame David Bowie, I listened to rock/punk/new wave, then I started listening to the music that was influencing Bowies on Station to Station, Young Americans etc and that was it. Listen to the track I bumped up to 1st pos on my playlist BTW: U2 meets African rock

Also, Ian Dury, Blondie and even Elvis Costello (well certainly their bands did, Norman Watt-Roy was a great bass player crossed over). The music scene in SA is hard to understand. On the coast we were listening to Santana, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, but punk woke things up bigtime...

Actually I heard only the single, and being a fan of Robert Palmer (a white dude who understands blues and funk) the coked-up Durannies just annoyed me. Funk 1 course, not even completed, ragged playing if you ask me. Then again more than a few YBW still listen to DD and Spandau Ballet, so what do I know...
I'll take your word for the production on the rest of the CD, at that time everything he touched was gold, Rodgers influenced me guitar and prod wise. Who produced "let's Dance"? Not my favourite D Bowie record, maybe NR though. Someone got a fat sound

I guess we are just getting old.... I liked r and b and funk but not disco before Chic etc, like Astral I also thought it was "frilly nonsense" but then I listened more closely to the guitar, bass and drums... convert!
