In reply to the ‘underdog’ column
I wasn’t looking for it but changing channels on TV I happened to stumble over the broadcast of Jay-Z performance at Glastonbury. What a waste of time and space.
He started off with a snippet of Oasis’ Wonderworld (I think... I’m not an Oasis fun anyway); of course this was in answer to one of the Oasis guys saying something negative about Jay-Z coming at Glastonbury.
Well all Jay-Z achieved by trying to sing Wonderworld was to show that he (Jay-Z) can’t sing.
Then he went on to do his stuff and I was really not impressed. I sometime listen to hip hop / rap but I don’t keep track of who makes which track. I like some of the hip hop stuff I dislike some other. So all I could do was compare Jay-Z to tons of CDs I listened to over the past few years (borrowed from my hip hop / rap fan friend) and other stuff I hear now and then on radio/TV/online stations.
Well , again ,I wasn’t impressed. All I can say after watching him perform is
• He can’t sing
• His voice as a hip hop artist is not as deep and cool as others
• His voice as hip hop artists is not as ‘not deep but cool’ as others
• Maybe it is just me but I really didn’t like his voice :)
• I didn’t think much about his music/songs as a whole.
I need to specify that my only experience in listening to Jay-Z is his performance at Glastonbury. I never listened to a CD of his. I never looked him up online and stuff like that. So if his performance was meant to show me how good he is, how cool his music is... well he failed!
I don’t feel like I want to go and look for more (online/cd)
Yes he had a live set, but of course musically it is ‘simple’, nothing that makes you go wow.
Maybe people do like him because the lyrics he writes/sings? (Assuming he writes them?) Well, I was so unimpressed with his performance that I didn’t feel compelled to pay attention to what his songs where trying to say.
What I thought of him overall after watching the pre-show talk (WWF wrestling style) with Tim Westwood...
- (T. Westwood: a white guy trying to sound like a black guy... I don’t know you but every time Westwood opens his mouth on the radio or on TV he just sounds stupid; I can’t understand why some people like him; black guys can feel/look cool in their hip hop attitude/ways... but Westwood trying to sound and look hip-hop just feels/look stupid).
What I thought of him overall after watching the pre-show talk (WWF wrestling style) with Tim Westwood... ...was that Jay-Z is just a clown, a buffoon maybe ticking some teenagers’ cool box? Really no idea why he is so popular (maybe because Beyonce?). Of course if what he does makes him money then he would be right to think why do it different
Anyway, luckily enough on another TV channel there was this other guy called Buddy Guy :)... now 'that' was entertaining and good; Buddy Guy’s songs also had some strong language but Buddy Guy is good... Jay-Z is trash.
