An overview of some of the new stuff in Logic 8

http://www.sonicstate.com/news/shownews.cfm?newsid=5360

I thought a separate thread for the new version could be a good idea.
One of the option for someone looking for a new set up is to of course to the Apple+Logic way. Elsewhere I said I'm keen for a PC+ProTolls LE set up, but Apple+logic is a valid option to I'm interested in what version 8 brings to the table

Wow, I'm impressed. Logic Studio has just set a new standard for quality/quantity/price!
I'm sure you all know by now that Logic dropped in price from £699 to about £300 and it is not sold as Logic Pro anymore but as Logic Studio, which includes: ogic Pro 8 +Main Stage + Soundtrack Pro 2 + Studio Instruments + Studios Effects + Studio Sound Library

It doesn't look like any new synth as been added, but overall tweaks have been implemented to instruments and effects to make them work in 5.1. Of course some interface improvements and some cool instrument-specific enhancements have also been implemented, for example:

Ultrabeat – New drum kits, new patterns and samples but also…
It can now read EXS drum kits; Full page drum-grid like a piano roll; instrument specific accents (within the kit), step sequencer with a row of steps per each instrument in the kit instead having all instruments of kit using the same row of steps… and more.

Overall, from what I understand Logic 8 is about polishing and enhancing what was already a top-level package.

The price is so good that I don’t even want to know why… but… then again… yes, I did ask myself why J

1) The first thing that springs to mind is that Apple wanted to add one more reason to render the action of ‘buying a PC’ redundant for musicians.
- MACs use Intel Processors (just like PCs)
- MACs now cost more or less the same as PCs
- MACs look nice :)
- MACs are renowned for their stability
- MACs can run both OSX and Windows XP
- Now a pro standard package like Logic, that only runs on MAC, not only is cheaper than Live or Sonar 6 but it costs half the price of Cubase!

This tactic is actually working for me… Soon I’ll need to upgrade my computer hardware (my PC died already more than once) and considering all the above and how much is in Logic Studio I am finding it very hard no to buy a Mac and forget PCs

My very first computer was actually an Apple IIc, same years when the Commodore 64 came out! Then I went… ‘never again!’ Apples were too expensive, software not cheap, even power cables were proprietary and expensive. Today, variety of software and some add-on hardware may still be a reason to buy a PC for general use, but to make music, right now, I personally believe Apple offers the best solution.

2) Would that be the only reason why Logic’s price dropped?
Well, one could say that Logic 8 does not offer much in terms of brand new synths or effects over Logic 7 (plenty of improvements though) so instead adding more stuff they have reduced the price to make it difficult for the competition.

Of course this is a direct challenge to Cubase (£650), Pro Tools LE (£220), Live 6 (£370), Sonar 6 (£370), Performer (£370).

How will these other guys answer to Apple’ s new pricing for Logic?
Will Steinberg half the price of Cubase and maybe keep Nuendo up?
Live is a bit unique so it may have an easier life. Sonar has always offered good value for money but now Logic is cheaper!

Well, people that own good PCs will probably stick to PC DAWs, but for everyone else options just got better. Indeed the winner is us, the consumer.

Correction... for the same money you can still get more hardware power from a PC

I did some price check yesterday.
I didn't consider building a PC buy yourself because you cannot do that with let's say an iMac but I compared the price of a 2.4Ghz Core Duo iMac with a 24'' Monitor against a similarly specked Dell and the iMAC is cheaper!

What is missing from the Mac range is something in between the iMAC and the PowerMac because the PowerMac goes straight to Dual Core or Quad Core Xeons machines while with PCs you can go to a quad core chip (not xeon) before going to xeon machines..

Apple is getting ready (buying) the new generation of intel chips but I don’t think we will see any of those before 2008

Steinberg Cubase 4 is now £379 and not £550/600 anymore
is this the effect of Logic dropping to £310 or did Cubase drop even before Logic announced the new price to the public?

Logic Pro 8 is cheaper, fun to work with, and would be great if you install its full sample library. But what I found strange is Editing/Fade as compared to Cubase SX 3. If you're a cubase user you will spend some time to get through it...lol first thing you will notice its cursor, it will not show its megnetic effect so easily. You know sometimes I manually enter the bar number to actually get there. Haha I had some funny moments. Don't worry after a while you will learn to handle it. Be careful with the editing its not like Cubase SX and dont hit Alt+S before checking everything is alright.

Thanks,

emagic logic has been at front of the game for a long time , with easy use lay out and simple but ease of use sample editer. i'v been a fan since logic pro 5.1, ive try all other programs and logic beat them all hands down. plus with the inprovments that have been made like 100% sample acrency on the arrenge window, plus the top synths a effects made by korg, the es2 is the daddy of soft synths for its time and modulation section still piss on what out there today. ands its nice price drop should put logic back in to people lives. you can stay with in the box and sound like your in a field full of colour which is more than what could be said for fruit loops or reason even number 4.

but pro and cons, its what you learn on frist that you stick with, there is no reason why you carnt make good tracks on anyfing its whos the inputer not the tools use.

peace
